Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure
Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure
The dreaded Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure displaying on your Mazda CX5 display, and of course your think it’s the oil pressure switch, but it’s not is it. The point of an oil pressure switch is to monitor the oil pressure flowing through the engine in your Mazda CX5, so when it flags up on your display, Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure simply means the oil pressure switch is doing what it’s supposed to do.
Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure, What is Oil Pressure
The point of oil pressure is to prevent metal-to-metal contact in moving parts like the crankshaft which is located at the bottom of the engine in the Mazda CX5 and is supported by what is called main bearings. These main bearings are indeed made from metal, but because of oil pressure, the crankshaft can rotate freely between the main bearings in a space no thicker than a piece of paper.
Mazda CX5 Drop In Oil Pressure
Once the Mazda CX5 Low Oil Pressure Warning is displayed it means there is a drop in Oil Pressure and those main bearings we mentioned earlier are at risk of metal to metal contact with the crankshaft, once that happens then the engine in the Mazda CX5 will fail.
What Provides Oil Pressure
The oil pump is what provides the oil pressure and is normally driven off the crankshaft in several different ways. The previous Mazda 6 engine used a gear-driven system which was pretty reliable until the main bearings would wear causing the crankshaft to rotate slightly off-center, then cause the teeth on the gear to chip and wear. Also in the previous Mazda 6 engine, the strainer goze located at the bottom of the oil pump would block causing the oil pump to fail in the first place.
Chain Driven Oil Pump
Chain driven oil pumps are more common in the Mazda CX5 Engine, they are driven via a small chain that is driven off a gear located on the end of the crankshaft, they are pretty reliable until the oil pump chain snaps causing a total loss of oil pressure in the Mazda CX5 Engine. There never has been a concrete reason as to why an oil pump chain would simply snap apart from oil carbonization which we will cover in the next article, there have been instances where an oil pump chain has snapped causing a total loss in oil pressure but no evidence of oil carbonization or low levels of oil.
Mazda CX5 Engine Failure
The discussion on Mazda CX5 Low Pressure will all lead to one outcome, total engine failure in the Mazda CX5 or Mazda 6 engine. There is no easy way to put it, once there is metal to metal contact due to Low Oil Pressure then the engine will simply fail and the only solution is to have a replacement engine for the Mazda CX5 or have the engine reconditioned
